True Loyalty

A Danish gin champion

Produce a cocktail masterpiece inspired by a London movie! That’s Beefeater’s concept challenge in 2016 for the best bartenders of the world. The Beefeater MIXLDN is the world’s biggest gin-based cocktail competition. All cocktails of course must include either the classisc london dry or the premium 24 Beefeater gin and make the gin shine. On top – this year’s creative challenge for MIXLDN 6 is that each cocktail must be inspired by a movie with a plot line that is significantly London-focused and includes a pivotal scene in London.

For the Danish finals 12 bartenders representing some of the best bars in Copenhagen had been selected from a group of 25 applicants to compete at Zoo Bar for a shot at the global finals taking place in London in February 2017. The line up of bartenders was strong this Sunday evening. After a few hours of passionate contesting the participants and jury selected the Danish gin champion for the global finals.

Daniel Calta from Kabuku took the prize with his  delicious cocktail “True Loyalty” inspired by Sherlock Holmes.

Daniel will be representing Denmark in London in February. Here the stakes will be high as he’ll be competing against brilliant bartenders from +30 other countries and this year’s winner will be invited to London to create and distill a limited edition of their very own gin. Working with Beefeater Master Distiller Desmond Payne, the winning bartender will select his/her own botanicals for a signature blend and have his/her name and winning cocktail recipe featured on the packaging for this limited edition gin!

Beefeater MIXLDN was first held in 2011 with only 50 entrants and 4 countries participating. By 2015, there were over 1200 entrants spanning 32 countries. In 2015  the Canadian bartender Evelyn chick took the prize with her winning cocktail – Ehe Endless English Summers.

I believe that true mastery eventually leads to original creation given the right conditions. I love creative cocktails that push the limits of flavor pairing. But I can't deny I have a personal preference for whisky and love everything that is clear and stirred.
